Umpqua Rick Fox Radical Caddis

Umpqua Rick Fox Radical Caddis
The Radical Caddis is a HOT fly on our western freestone streams. It fishes wonderfully from California to Colorado! Fish it deep through your favorite pocket-water and hang on. It sure is real eye candy, with a translucent body that has to be seen to be believed!

Rick Fox discussing the Development of the Radical Caddis:

This fly series was something I developed with the encouragement of Dave Hall, Bruce Olsen and the rest of the guys up at Umpqua Feather Merchants. It's evolved into it's current state after a couple of years playing around with different materials and some constructive, and positive comments from  tiers like Tim Fox and Jim Pettis, Andy Burk, Jeff Putnam, Dave Shafer and Greg Vinci. I remember putting this pattern to the test one day on the little Truckee River when Baetis were coming off and trout were feeding on the nymphs sub-surface and also the emergers and duns on top. I was completely amazed that I didn't have one fish taken on a Poxyback Baetis fished through the runs. Every fish I landed had a size 16 Green Radical Caddis set in their jaws. Seeing fish break off from a standard feeding pattern on Baetis and popping this thing helped solidify the current design. One vivid memory was a nice chunky 17" bow that streaked around a heavy water main current, smacking this pattern like it was it's last meal. Guide Mike Macklin owner of Sierra Fly Fishers fly-shop in Auburn, Ca recently hooked a 23" brown on the Truckee River on the Green Radical Caddis. I think this particular fly series has some positive things that make it a productive pattern. Namely the triggers I tried to incorporate into the design. I think the generous amount of epoxy spread over the beads and chenille gives a good representation of a caddis pupa enveloped in a myriad of air bubbles. The Flashabou tailing over the top and the bead-head design adds a bit of flash to the pattern and the Z-lon "wing" tied over the top is more for grabbing air bubbles from the water then directly trying to imitate a physical feature on the real bug. The picked out dubbed collar just gives a buggy appearance to the fly. The best way to fish this pattern is on a dead-drift through the runs, riffles & pocket water.

There are so many great caddis patterns. The Radical Caddis is one such great pattern. The use of epoxy for the abdomen is an innovative idea. I\'m sure that there will be more flies with that. Of course the fly catches fish, too.
